In a bombshell exposé, citizen journalist Ray Sanders has accused the UK Met Office of fabricating temperature data from over 100 non-existent weather stations. Sanders’ findings, which have sparked controversy, claim that out of 302 locations supposedly reporting temperature averages, 103 simply do not exist. Sanders has reported his findings to Peter Kyle MP, the new Science Minister, pressing for an acknowledgment of potential inaccuracies.
Sanders’ investigation began with Freedom of Information requests and on-site checks, leading him to assert that Met Office sites in Kent, including locations like Dungeness and Dover, are fictitious. Notably, Dungeness has reportedly lacked a weather station since 1986, while Dover’s supposed site sits on a beach, calling into question the accuracy of data attributed to these locations. The Daily Sceptic corroborated that these sites are not listed by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), raising questions about the authenticity of data supposedly sourced from these areas.
The practice of inventing or estimating data, Sanders warns, undermines scientific integrity, especially as such data shapes climate policy. He compares it to similar practices in the United States, where NOAA, the national weather service, is accused of fabricating data for over 30% of its stations, marking estimates with an “E.”
Another layer of Sanders’ allegations focuses on the Met Office’s use of poorly placed stations, with nearly 80% ranked in low WMO classes, which tolerate inaccuracies of up to 5°C. Many of these stations are in environments likely to yield higher-than-average temperatures, such as car parks and urban gardens, further skewing data.
Sanders argues that the closure of rural stations and reliance on urban sites have created an artificial temperature rise, a “statistical sleight of hand.” According to Sanders, the Met Office’s silence in response to these claims, as well as the lack of mainstream media interest, suggests a broader agenda favouring Net Zero goals over transparent scientific data.
